Antojo Tacos & Tequila is located on Argyle Street in the heart of downtown Halifax, Nova Scotia. We loved it so much we went twice in one weekend! We went the first time at night for nachos, and then the second time the next day at noon for some tacos.
Distribution of Toppings
The chips were layered very well at Antojo Tacos & Tequila. There was a lot of cheese, pork, black beans, and onions. They were very very rich, and if it ever happened that there was a chip with nothing on it, there were many different types of dips to come with them. You see in the picture that it was just salsa and sour cream; however, you receive some chips with some dips as an appetizer (included in the price) as well as other hot sauces. In addition, they put spice on the chips. In other words, there was never a dull moment with this plate of nachos.
Quality
The pork was very juicy, fresh, and tender and the cheese was melted just right. The chips are typical chips that I ate when I ordered nachos in Mexico. The corn chips are thicker and crispier. The guacamole was better than what you would usually get when you order guacamole, but I think Taco Pica had them beat in the quality of guacamole. I really liked how there were chips as an appetizer (before the nachos) with 3-4 different dips to try and one of those dips was green salsa! (one of my favorites). In addition, they have super hot sauce for those that want to brave sauce as hot as insanity sauce at Jungle Jim's. Finally, I really enjoyed the spice they put on their chips, but sometimes, it was too much spice.
Value
Under snacks, the nachos cost $13 and as far as I remember, this is your only size in terms of nachos at this restaurant. To order chicken and two different types of pork, they are $2 extra and to order steak, they are $3 extra. The average price of veggie nachos in Saint John is $15, so these Halifax nachos with pork and two dips are a good value.
Quantity
The quantity was fair, but I was full going into it. I had to slowly eat the nachos that I shared. I think I would have to go back when I am really hungry to really be able to assess the quantity. Darn.
Service
The waitress for late night and the waiter for lunch were both very attentive and made sure we had everything we needed in a timely manner. They also enjoyed my review of the nachos and the green tea! Green tea? You ask? Yes, when you order green tea, you get this big pot of delicious tea! Hits the spot!
Conclusion
Antojo Tacos & Tequila is highly recommended if you want to try nachos in Halifax. I have a secret. I have tried nachos in Halifax before, but all I have are pictures and no memories of the experience. You could say that those were not memorable nacho experiences until my time at this restaurant. The quality, distribution of toppings, value, and service are all top notch. Perfect for a late night snack!
